What is a finished particleboard panel and why does it matter to the furniture industry?
Particleboard is a wood-based panel made from wood particles hot-pressed with adhesive resins. On its own, it has a raw surface, but once covered – or finished, according to industry terminology – it becomes a standard material for furniture, cabinet doors, shelving and furnishing components thanks to a cost/performance ratio that is difficult to match with solid wood or plywood.
The most widely used covering is melamine: a sheet of paper impregnated with melamine resin and pressed onto the panel at high temperature. It provides resistance to scratches, stains and everyday wear, as well as extensive aesthetic freedom – wood grains, solid colours, stone or concrete effects.

The range of coverings that can be applied to particleboard includes melamine papers, HPL and CPL laminates, PET, PVC and real-wood veneers, as well as digitally printed laminates produced in-house and fully customisable in colour, texture and finish. For environments more exposed to moisture, such as kitchens, bathrooms and laundry areas, the choice of covering and particleboard type – including moisture-resistant versions – is a technical aspect that should already be assessed at the specification stage, rather than added as a later variation.
